This page will be about recording.
Recording is used in tournaments to make sure that no one cheats. You can also record games to see where you went wrong.
When playing, the bottom right square is always white. |
|
The ranks on a chessboard are numbered 1-8. The files on a chessboard have their own letter from a-h. |
Taking
To take a piece you put an x in between the two letters. E.g. Bxf3.
Check and checkmate
To record check you write a + after the number. For checkmate you write a # after the number. E.g. Bf3+ for check or Bf3# for checkmate.
Recording castling
To record kingside castling you write 0-0. To record queenside castling you write 0-0-0.
Knights
The only difference between knights and other pieces is that the first letter is N so not to confuse with the king. E.g. Nf3.
Pawns
Recording pawns is like any other piece except for the first letter, which isn't there.
You just write where the pawn is being moved to. In the next page I use pawn moves and they say e4.
To record pawn taking a piece you write the file, an x and where the piece is being moved to. E.g. f3 or exf3, or gxf3.

Here is an example of recording in this opening. I show this opening is the next page.
White starts with e4. This is the pawn moving to e4.
Black responds with e5.
White brings out the knight to f3. This is written as Nf3.
Black plays e5. This opening is called the elephant gambit.
For the next three pages, I would recommend getting a chessboard, and practising everything on that chessboard. If your chessboard hasn't got numbers and letters you can write them on. But remember that there has to be a white square at the bottom right.
